My One Year Natural Hair Update

How are you all today? Long time, no see. I’ve been natural for about a year now. It went by pretty fast. It seems like just yesterday I was clipping off my relaxed ends. I know that I’m due for an update so here it goes.

My hair

My hair seems much fuller now. I can finally put it into a decent puff. I’m still having some issues with single strand knots. I’ve found that keeping up with my trim schedule and doing oil rinses really help.

Now, I really need a trim. Earlier in the year, I was pretty consistent at doing them every 3 months. I’ve slacked off this half of the year. I plan to get a trim before the end of the year. Detangling is very difficult and I have quite a few single strand knots.

In terms of styling, I’m still pretty limited. I basically do twists or do different braid-out styles. I finally tried that wash and go. It turned out pretty well. It just causes my hair to shrink.

I am experiencing some breakage, especially towards the front. I believe it has something to do with my styling and my scarf situation. Normally, I wear my hair to the back since I don’t really like my hair in my face. Pushing to the back may cause undue tension which can lead to breakage. My scarf doesn’t really stay on at night. I think I’m a fitful sleeper. I may consider getting a silk/satin pillowcase.

Goals from the previous update. Did I achieve them?

  • keep up with protective/low manipulation styling
  • try a wash and go

I think I did pretty well with my goals. Currently, I don’t have any new goals. I just want to maintain my hair as best as I can.
