The Wash Day Experience: Felicia Leatherwood Style

It’s been 4 months since my last wash day post. 😯 It’s not like I stopped washing my hair. The posts were getting too repetitive. I’m not sure about you but I find that a bit boring. However, this wash day is a bit different. Felicia Leatherwood dropped some hair care knowledge at NNHB 2016. The Kink and I shared many of the nuggets she shared last year and most of it was the same this time. I wanted to implement some of her tips this wash day.

Here’s what happened.

[1] Detangling – I removed my twists the previous night and finger detangled. I put my hair into 4 sections. The next day, I used the Ewami Essentials Detangling Mist on smaller sections within the large section. Then, I finger detangled and used a comb. I put the small sections into twists. I noticed I lost less hair this time. 😀

[2] Shampoo Felicia recommended using shampoo on your dry scalp so that it can start breaking down the dirt and oils. My hair and scalp had some build up so I needed to clarify. I used the ORS Creamy Aloe Shampoo on dry hair, focussing on the scalp. Then, I rinsed it out. For the second wash, I used a sample of the Shea Moisture SuperFruit Complex 10-in-1 Renewal System Shampoo. For a sulfate-free shampoo, it lathers quite well. I rinsed it out and squeezed out the excess water.

[3] Protein TreatmentFelicia also recommended using the Aphogee 2-Step Protein Treatment if you have excessive shedding or breakage. She says to use it every 6 weeks for 6 months and check to see if you have improvement. I’ve used the 2-step treatment with my relaxed hair and it is very good. I don’t think my natural hair needs a strong protein treatment like that. I used the Aphogee Keratin 2-Minute Reconstructor and left it on my hair for about 5 minutes. Then, I rinsed it out and towel dried my hair.

[4] Deep ConditionerFelicia advised detangling your hair with conditioner and twisting it up. Then, you should rinse the conditioner out while it is in the twists. For my deep conditioner, I used a sample of the Shea Moisture SuperFruit Complex 10-in-1 Renewal System Hair Masque. I applied it sections, twisted my hair and wrapped my head in cling film. I left the deep conditioner on for about an hour. This wasn’t intentional. 🙁 The conditioner had a little slip, which was nice. When I rinsed out the conditioner, I noticed that it didn’t rinse very well. I could see white patches from the conditioner. I may have used too much product. At the end of it all, I ended up taking out the twists and rinsing three times. I think I may just stick to sections for now.

[5] Styling – After towel drying, I applied the Cantu Creamy Hair Lotion to each section and sealed with my oil mix. Then, I braided each section to keep it stretched and let it air dry.

Felica Leatherwood has some pretty good tips to get great hair. Some of them I will keep (shampoo on dry hair) and some gotta go (deep conditioning in twists). This wash day went pretty well. I’m still learning how to handle my hair.

What are some tips you learned to get your best wash days?
