Hair vitamins have been all the rage in healthy hair circles. You might be considering one to try and support your hair growth. This post looks at two supplements that I am familiar with: Manetabolism Plus and Perfectil. There are MANY hair vitamins on the market but I chose these two because I have previous experience with them.
Below are the six criteria for comparison.
- Supplement ingredients
- Tablet/Capsule form and dosage
- changes to skin and body hair*
(*) Based on my personal experience.
There are various vitamins and minerals known for supporting hair growth, including the B vitamins and vitamin C.
Vitamin C is and helps build collagen. Collagen is an essential protein for hair growth. Vitamin C also helps with the absorption of iron. Anemia, which can occur with low iron levels, reduces the capability of your blood to transport oxygen throughout the body effectively. Vitamin C, along with Zinc, helps boost immunity.
Vitamin D is known to keep bones strong and healthy. A 2012 study (Stem Cells Translational Medicine) suggests that Vitamin D can help create new follicles. It also helps with the immune system.
Vitamin E is an antioxidant and can reduce oxidative stress. It has been shown that taking vitamin helps with hair growth.
Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin which helps produce keratin (another essential hair protein). It also helps your eyes and liver function properly. A deficiency in biotin is associated with hair loss. Biotin is usually found in high doses in some hair vitamins.
Manetabolism Plus and Perfectil have different doses of each vitamin and/or mineral. Below is a table of some key vitamins and minerals of each supplement.
|Vitamin or Mineral||Perfectil||Manetabolism Plus|
|Vitamin C||60 mg||100 mg|
|Vitamin D||200 IU||400 IU|
|Vitamin E||40 mg (59.6 IU)||15 IU|
|Biotin||45 mcg||5000 mcg|
|Niacin||18 mg||10 mg|
|Magnesium||75 mg||50 mg|
|Zinc||15 mg||10 mg|
Manetabolism has high doses of biotin and some of the other B vitamins but it lacks in iron. Perfectil seems a bit more balanced and has recommended daily allowances for most of the vitamins.
Tablet form and Dosage
Both vitamins come in capsule form. Manetabolism has a light wheat color while Perfectil has a dark brown color. With Perfectil, the dosage is one capsule every day. The dosage is two capsule daily with Manetabolism. The dosage can be taken all at once or split over the day.
In terms of cost, Perfectil wins this round. It’s in the range of NGN 2,000 – NGN 2,500 for a 30-day supply. Manetabolism Plus is NGN 6,300 (on the Mane Choice Africa site) for a 30-day supply.
Perfectil is widely available at various chemists and pharmacies. You can usually walk into one and pick it up. On the other hand, Manetabolism is usually available online. I purchased my bottles from The Mane Choice Africa.
Overall, I had a better experience with Manetabolism Plus. However, I was consistent and I am taking better care of myself in general. I took Perfectil for a few months but I did not track my growth as thoroughly like I did with Manetabolism. Also, I was not in the greatest health at the time. Looking back, I don’t think that Perfectil could do much because of my poor diet and minimal exercise.
Changes to skin and body hair
With Perfectil, I had some breakouts during the first two weeks of use. It wasn’t too bad and my skin calmed down pretty quickly. I also noticed a slightly itchy scalp. I did not have these side effects with Manetabolism Plus. I would get a pimple once in a while but I don’t think it was due to the vitamins. Contrary to some stereotypes about Igbo girls, I’m not a naturally hairy person. I barely have hair on my body. My body hair situation didn’t change while using either supplement.
Now, you have a bit more information about two popular hair vitamins. Hopefully, this helps you make a decision if you are interested in hair vitamins.
