Wash Day | Making it last

Wash Day - Making it last

I had big plans for this wash day. Soft bouncy curls that last more than a day. Big, big dreams.

Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out so well. 🙁 I have some theories as to why. The wash day itself went well and FAST. Washing in braids for the win. Here’s what happened. . .

(1) Pre-poo and detangling: I applied a mixture of lavender JBCO, peppermint, tea tree, and eucalyptus essential oils to my scalp. For my hair, I used a mixture of olive, coconut, and hemp seed oils which I warmed in hot water. I sectioned my hair and detangled each section. Then, I braided my 12 box braids. I didn’t use the rubber bands this time.

(2) Shampoo and coffee rinse: This week, I used Crème of Nature Argan Oil Shampoo and did two washes. My hair seemed to be shedding quite a bit so I did a coffee rinse with instant coffee. I kept the rinse on for five minutes and rinsed with cool water.

(3) Deep conditioning: After the coffee rinse, I dried my hair with a towel for 10 minutes. Then, I applied a mixture of ORS Replenishing Conditioner, hemp seed, castor, and olive oil over each braid. I covered my hair with cling film and sat with my heating cap for 20 minutes. I rinsed out the conditioner and followed up with an ACV rinse. Then, I rinsed again with cool water.

(4) Leave-ins and Styling: I dried my hair with a t-shirt for 15 minutes and applied Giovanni Direct Leave-in to each braid. Once the leave-in absorbed a bit, I sealed with my oil mix (hemp seed + coconut + olive oil). I took down each braid, applied ORS Olive Oil Wrap & Set Mousse, and combed through the section. (very little hair was lost)Then, I put in my curlformers using small sections. I used all the curlformers and 5 flexi-rods. I sat under the dryer for 45 minutes but the flexi-rods still weren’t dry. I kept them in overnight.

The curls were alright the next day but not so fluffy. I ended up putting in an updo with a little bang. Sorry no pics … I was running late for work that day. That evening, I went for a walk outside. It was quite humid and there were glycerin products (my deep conditioner) in my hair. My hair puffed up but it felt super moisturized. The moisture lasted for 2 days which is great. I only used one leave-in and normally I load up my hair with product. Less is more. 😀 This time of year isn’t the best for curls. I need to wait for harmattan. I knew this and I even wrote a post about it. I want to try this again with products that have little to no humectants.

My ends aren’t looking so hot and I want to trim. Actually, I want to get a haircut. However, I’m going to try to wait until January. By that time, the various challenges that I’m doing will be over.

How do you make your curls last? Do you want to switch up your hair?
