Last Sunday (June 7th), Dabs of Naija Hair Hair Can Grow had her annual Salon Day Out. I missed it last year because I wasn’t in Lagos. This year, I no go carry last. Is my pidgin improving? 🙂 It was a jam-packed event.
I got there after 1 p.m. during the Hair Journey Series. Lade of Rehairducation, Sandra of Naija Girl Next Door, Koyinsola of Tresses by K. Vera-Cruz, Atilola of African Naturalistas and Dabs spoke about their personal hair journeys. Each on was quite interesting. A common thread throughout each journey was each person had to find out what worked for her. For example, Sandra’s hair tangles when she uses tea rinses but Atilola’s hair loves them. Koyinsola had a fantastic tip about choosing products. If you find a product that works well for your hair, look at the ingredients. When you want to get another product, make sure it has those ingredients in it. Chances are that it will work well for your hair.
Next up was the Hair Styling Series. Kemi Lewis of KL’s Naturals did an up-do with natural hair. Patrick of Patrick’s Beauty Zone did a blow dry and curl with a human hair weave. Finally, Dabs and her Savvy and Chic Team did some faux locs on Berry Dakara. Dabs created this method herself and it cuts the installation time in half. A member of the audience said it usually takes 6 – 8 hours. Dabs method takes 3 hours. According to Dabs, this method isn’t available online. No doubt, Nigerians are creative!
The last segment was the Battle of the Hairlistas. There were two teams, Team Glamly Nappy and Team On Fleek, competing for prizes from Design Essentials and Savvy and Chic. They had to complete various tasks, from every day looks to avant-garde styles. In the end, Team On Fleek won. I had to agree with the judges that Team On Fleek seemed more organized and had a strategy. It seemed like they prepared a bit more than the other team.
There were also giveaways and so much shopping. I missed some of my readers. Etisalat was acting funny 🙁 Hey Emem and Nitta! The event was fun but it was a bit long. The MC was an interesting character. I think it started late. I was starving by the time I got home but at least we got some snacks. Dabs may have to get a larger venue next time because it was almost over-flowing. But, it’s better than having an empty event.
