Relaxer Update #2

I got my hair relaxed  at 12 weeks post. This is the first time I went to a salon for a touch-up for over 2 years. I was a bit trepidatious but I needed to have someone else do it. My previous relaxers were too under-processed, particularly in the crown which is my most resistant area. I used ORS No-Lye relaxer because my scalp has been a bit sensitive. Here’s how everything went.

Before I  went to the salon

Before

Before

  • Applied JBCO to scalp and moisturized and sealed hair with grapeseed oil
  • Detangled with  wide tooth comb to make for easier parting. I was very gentle to prevent any breakage
  • Then I applied Vaseline to my scalp and coated previously relaxed hair with olive oil

At the salon

The stylist re-based my scalp with petroleum jelly and then the relaxer got started. The application process took some time but he made sure not to get the relaxer directly on my scalp and saved the edges for last. The whole process took 25 mins which I thought was too long. He used a comb and smoothed it a lot with his hands. After rinsing, he did mid-relaxer protein step for 5 minutes with Aphogee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor. Then, he shampooed twice with Creamy Aloe Shampoo and applied the Replenishing Conditioner and left it on for 5 minutes. Once that was rinsed out, my hair was towel dried and then he added the moisturizer and wrap and set mousse. Next, my hair was roller set. During the roller setting, he trimmed about 1.5 inches (~3.8 cm) off each section. After the roller set, my hair was dried for an hour under the hooded dryer. After the rollers were removed, he applied ORS HAIRepair Intense Moisture Creme and put me under dryer for another 10 minutes. Then, he styled my hair in a faux bob.

My hair seems like it’s bone straight. I would’ve liked a bit more texture but not as much as I have gotten with my self-relaxers. My hair feels a bit dry and rough. I think it may be from the mineral deposits from the no-lye relaxer. I’m planning to use a chelating shampoo (ORS Creamy Aloe Shampoo) and do extra moisturizing with deep conditioning. I’m also planning to do a co-wash this week to get the moisture back. I got some KeraCare Humecto too. I think that will help with the moisture too. I saw Ghanian Emprezz’s review and some other reviews of it so I think it will help. Overall, the relaxer was okay. Not bad but not great.
